Schematics: A Love Story

This may just be the most evocative, enigmatic books I've ever read, or perhaps studied is a better word. Julian Hibbard pairs geometric schematics with simple prose to form a beautiful narrative. Hibbard explains that the diagrams are found by googling words derived from the essence of the right-hand text, thus enhancing their meaning and relating abstract human concepts to equally confounding scientific ones. I'm terrible with words so I'll let David LaRocca further explain below but above are my favourites of the book, I'd truly recommend it to anyone. Buy it on Amazon here.

We encounter in Schematics: A Love Story a portfolio of nebulous black and white diagrams alongside solemn poetic observations that subtly suggest a novel apprehension of the nature of transformation.
Schematics operate simultaneously and two distinctive registers: the deeply personal (a love story between if the narrator and the objects of his affection, desire, and confusion) and the profoundly anonymous (a love story within matter-subject of gravity, magnetism, genetics, mechanics, electricity, and this space time continuum). The first-person voice, though, should not necessarily be assumed to reveal the authorial confession; rather, consider how the voice is structurally and tonally autobiographical. The “self” it references is fluid, permeable, expansive. The prose, then , is not dissimilar to the drawings: they are lines in pursuit of the expression of form, activity, character, and position. Just as the diagrams chart ethereal, often invisible phenomena, so the narrator’s prose strains to articulate mysterious forces of the heart, head and hand. As the drawings made the indeterminate concrete, the narrator transforms a private sentiment into something sufficiently generic to be useful to all readers, an aid to our own reflections.
Drawn together, these two strands the personal and the anonymous – reveal how Schematics is primarily about the experience of attraction, repulsion, and resistance, and getting nearer to some objects while moving farther away from others. It is, in other words, a story of love – love as a force of nature – and the pursuit of knowledge.

This week I started my studies at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design and from the very moment I walked through the doors it was impressed upon me how important the Foundation specialisation and BA course choices are for, well, my whole life. I had given myself this year to figure out exactly what I wanted to do in the world of art and design since Foundation is when you're supposed to try out everything in order to see where you belong. But no. We have to decide sharpish because specialisation begins at the 4 week mark.

I've been getting more and more confused about my future the last couple of months and now I see the time to make a decision has come at last. I'd always thought myself a career in fashion. Design specifically. But in the last couple of years I've explored so many paths that in some ways suit me better. Web design is a big part of my life - I fiddle with something or other every day - and I can easily see a viable career doing that. Fashion these days is so competitive and snipey and stressful (I literally hide from stress) which doesn't sound like a happy life. I need happy. Hence my solution (for now, it will probably change within a few weeks) of studying jewellery design.

I had a bout of jewelling the summer before last; I made chainmaille bracelets and found it simply fascinating. Beautiful. A wonderful craft that combines geometry and logical thinking with creativity and experimentalism. Whilst looking up the BA Jewellery Design course at CSM I found two awesome things - 1) The two main tutors are both watchmakers, if you knew my penchant for watches you would understand my excitement about this morsel of info. 2) The class of 2010 made a website to showcase their work, all incredibly interesting and many things that I would be overly excited to learn how to make, and I discovered this wonderful eyewear collection by Moo Piyasombatkul, of which the bottom four pieces are available for purchase at Opening Ceremony Online. I can't wait to start creating pieces as wonderful as this.

Sorry for crazy-long ramblings about my future. Just stare at the wonderful glasses and be happy.

Recently I've become obsessed with writing (on paper). I've found it's really satisfying to have record of ideas, from their development right up to their execution. Notebooks are just the best inventions if, like me, you stuggle with words and communicating your trail of thought with others. Since this started about 2 month ago I've gotten through 3 spirals and a huge pack of post-its; mainly with web designs and life lists, future plans and freehand sketches.

The problem is that I've had free access to perfect mini-sketchbooks from my lovely school art department and now I've left school, thus no more free supplies. I like to buy quality, well-made things so WHSmith's 5-pack isn't going to cut it. After some serious research I picked Field Notes over Moleskine and Jottrr. Field Notes are beautiful and earthy and have a military-style Futura block type on the front. People make the covers pretty as well by drawing and screen-printing and their awesome (sold out) dry transfer editions where you title it whatever you want.

Then after some severe stalking I found some of their videos about the production process. It's such an exact art. Printing presses are just fascinating, how the repetition is so precise and ah I can't explain quite how much passion I have for when creative aesthetics meet productivity and mathematics. I think that conjunction is formally called 'Design'. Anyway. These are so charming I've bought a set complete with rubber bands, pens and pencils, I can't wait to start creating in them.

Life is more fun when you look absolutely ridiculous. I've been wanting to post about these boots since I got them ~6 weeks ago and the yearning to reference Harry Potter overruled rationality. On top of that there's nobody around to take pictures so I took a video hoping to get at least one good still, but I didn't actually stop singing through this whole ordeal so there weren't any caps without a bizarre facial expression. Screw it, gifs are way cooler anyways (apart from I can't put it on LB. sob). Back to the boots - ~~I only bought them for the laces~~ they're like bowling shoes cross ice skates cross sneakers and ever so comfy. I have a boot obsession, these are pair #2 of this year (the others were Carvela, sorry bank balance!), please intervene if I buy more.

This was actually from the very beginning of this month (the third to be exact) but I've only just remembered about it due to the CSM interview the following day. Diva Zappa, Frank Zappa's daughter, has three middle names, Thin Muffin Pigeen. That basically describes this exhibition- crazy. She hand knits everything from her stream of consciousness without a plan, it can be a poncho or a skirt, a hat or a tea cosy. I was invited to the opening of her show (in a Soho cake shop no less) and was astounded by how much bounce Diva had about her; upstairs she displayed the beginnings of her attempt at 'world's longest scarf', currently at 5 metres but someday it'll be a mile long. That sort of determination is so inspiring. I wouldn't wear any of these, but as pieces of art they're very intriguing. Did I mention that they're going for £2000?

Welcome to the Art Department! I sit at the desk next to Anna, the one with the incred Pokémon poster :) So the reason for this post is that I'm using it to mask a really cool thing I found out today - photocopiers don't let you copy money. It was something for Photography, we had to scan ourselves and the only prop I had was money (which by the way isn't mine, it's for party decs) so there I was with my face and a fan of 20s on a glass screen and it came out all black, and the printer was fine after that.. strange. On a different subject I think over the next couple of months I'll do posts on my other desks (I have 5 now: bedroom, studio, and boarding house to go)

So I've attained an internet connection in Malta, and we had our first dives today (which went horribly wrong, lots of drama, but later on the pool dive was great); I just wanted to show off my plane snaps which will be added to my photography microsite when I get the time and energy. I first heard of Marina Diamandis back in April 2009 with her singles 'Obsessions' and 'Mowgli's Road' as was encapsulated by her unique voice. And now she's on a US tour! Susan Wreakes, the ex-knitwear designer, decided to show me her old portfolio today after months of bugging. *blow away* She says she's not a good illustrator but some of these made me swoon; and the sample knits were just delectable. I had a photo shoot yesterday with my beautiful Anna in an abandoned shed full of old dolls, trunks and hardware. We had some awesome clothes to work with, courtesy of To The Black, a British design company which specialises in printing t-shirts, sweatshirts, bags, and recently leather jackets. I love their subtle manipulations of cult symbols; as for their style, it's difficult to describe it as anything other than aloofly cool. I don't even know what to say about this... I stole the 'jumper' and belt from mother; she's always good for fancywear.
